Nerves, How many and Where?

Nerves, How many and Where?

No one knows or can see how many nerves you have in your turbinates or elsewhere in your septum or nasal cavity including doctors who perform nasal surgeries but let’s use this simple diagram borrowed from Gray’s anatomy and make some predictions below.

If we aggressively reduce the heads (circled above right) and cut off everything below the red line, how many nerve endings are left? The answer to the unknowable question: According to that picture, not many! Many sources also show the same nerve branches extending up into the septum. Now if we also do a “Septoplasty” (surgical reduction of the septum) by cutting along the bottom of both edges of the septum, and thus severing any nerves that come up from below how many nerve endings are left connected now? Answer: Even less! I have had TWO bilateral turbinate reductions AND TWO Septoplasties and I have almost no sensation in my nose. I can spray air right into my nose from a lab solvent style squeeze bottle and I feel nothing.
